Private Lessons

There are a total of 42 private lessons in the 12-month period beginning on September 5, 2017 & ending on August 24, 2018. There are 36 lessons during the school year (Sep-Jun) plus 6 lessons during the summer (Jul-Aug). All private lessons take place at my home studio in North Portland. The success of your child depends on how often you practice with them on a weekly basis. A commitment to a 5-day practice per week is EXPECTED. Listening to the Suzuki repertory should happen DAILY.

Group CLASSEs

Weekly Monday group classes will take place in the library space at Central Lutheran Church, 1820 NE 21st Ave. Attendance is EXPECTED to participate in the performances throughout the year. No more than 3 absences per term will be tolerated. Each term consists of 10 classes culminating in a recital. Please refer to the dates and schedule below for your class time according to your child’s level.

RECITALS

Frequent performances give students the opportunity to share what they have learned in a supportive environment and are EXPECTED of all students. Both solo and group recitals take place throughout the year.

Graduation Recitals

Students prepare a solo recital at the completion of a volume of the Suzuki repertoire. This involves preparing the complete list of pieces from the book with accompaniment.  This recital may take place at the student’s home to which friends and family are invited.  The date of the recital should be set two months in advance. Students may opt to do a joint recital with another graduating student.

SOLO RECITAL DATES:

  • Feb 11 Sun 2:00 pm (Central Lutheran Church)
  • May 19 Sat 4:00 pm (Central Lutheran Church)

GROUP RECITAL DATES

  • Mar 18 Sun 2:00 PM (TBD)
  • Jun 10 Sun Recital 2:00 PM (TBD)

Parent Education

All parents are EXPECTED to read Nurtured By Love by Dr. Suzuki. A parent forum will take place on Dec 18, Mon 6-7 pm. Parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled Dec 19-21, in place of lessons. Your monthly tuition includes a Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) membership for a year. This entitles you to receive the SAA Quarterly Journal filled with informative articles written by other Suzuki parents, teachers and students.

Institutes & Annual Workshop

To ensure that my students are exposed to the larger Suzuki community, I EXPECT families to attend an SAA Institute every year. In addition to attending an institute, I invite a clinician annually to work with my students in the spring. This workshop includes a master class, a group class and a parent forum. The spring workshop will take place April 13-15, Fri-Sun with SAA Teacher Trainer Martha Shackford.
